Milkyway Disc

the Milkyway Galaxy disc is roughly 100,000 - 200,000 Lys in diameter ( cut in half that would be about 50,000-100,000 for each half ) how do I go about making 2 partial discs in astrosynthesis 3.0 and populating them with stars, planets, etc.? while retaining the shape of a disc?...can it be done??

  • The full Milky Way has hundreds of billions of stars, so its not something Astro would be able to map out in its entirety.

But if you just want a general disk shape, you might use a script to compress the stars in a spherical sector along the Y (vertical) axis. There is one in this package here called "squash" that might do the trick:

The alternative is a script that deletes systems in a spherical sector that lie outside a disk. Six of one, half dozen of the other

If you want spiraling arms and such, I think you'd have to roll something significantly more sophisticated. You would probably need to generate straight arms that intersect the center, and then rotate them to get the spiral look.

  • Is there still a way to get the package "squash" I clicked the link and it led me to "whoops" page, thanks
