Nebula of unusual size.

Hello, all.

Has anyone had much luck building/modeling a large nebula? And by large I'm thinking Eagle Nebula large; a few dozen light years across. My current map project call for at least two of these.

I know that different approaches have been suggested, including blazons and spheres of influence. I'm wondering if anyone has had much luck with this, or with a different approach. I tried the blazon approach, which while labor intensive, could be used to construct a large nebula. Example:

What I liked about this was that you could pan around the nebula just like the stars, and its appearance changed depending on your angle. My example uses only a green bitmap, but most nebula have a varied palate. If using the blazon approach, are there any sites out there for appropriate bitmaps?

Thanks.
