Murder!

Here's something different. Based on https://www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/murder-map-reveals-medieval-londons-meanest-streets and especially the data on https://www.vrc.crim.cam.ac.uk/vrcresearch/london-medieval-murder-map/historical-background this generator will produce a random but historically plausible set of murders for a city of the specified population, assuming it's pretty much like 14th century London. The number of murders will be randomly from 16-27 per 100000 population, which matches historical data, but does not work particularly well for very small settlements (this is better for towns and cities, so population > 10000 or so).

This year in your city or town, the following murders occurred:

The victim was killed by a female purse-cutter and 7 family members in the late evening on Monday. They were on a wharf. The victim was slashed in the hands, arms, and shoulders with a short knife, and died after 11 hours.

The victim was killed by a male baker in the late evening on Saturday. The victim was in the perpetrator's residence. The victim was struck multiple times in different locations with a staff, and died after 7 hours.

The victim was killed by a female child and one brother in the late evening on Sunday. The victim was in an unspecified public space. The victim was struck in the chest with a staff, and died immediately.

The victim was killed by a male craftsman and one brother on Wednesday in the early evening. They were in the victim's residence. The victim was struck in the head with a long knife, and died immediately.

Probably this would be better as a piece of a larger random event generator but if you want some random history for personal events, or something for the town guard to complain about, it might be useful as is.

  • As always, thanks for sharing! Could be useful as a called generator within a "crime" generator. Or as you say, within a "recent events" generator for a settlement. Nice work!

  • This is, by far the most fun one I've come across thus far!
